Hi, Jean. My real complaint was that I had heard that 98% number thrown around all day -- from morning news shows to afternoon and evening ones, and even someone quoted on NPR. You'd think that *someone* would have said to themselves, "Hey, that's a pretty big number, maybe I'd better see how they came up with it".

Hope to see you with snowshoes on soon.

Jean carping here. (Could I haddock if I wished? Perhaps perch? No, that would be linguistically confusing.) (1) The argument wasn't that "98% of Catholic women use contraceptives" but that 98% of Catholic women HAVE used contraceptives. Just as senseless but let's not confuse our senselessnesses. (2) In the blog post referenced above, the blogger quotes Rachel Jones, lead author of the Guttmacher Institute study that gave rise to the "statistic", as saying “If we had included women up to age 89, we would have probably found a lower proportion had ever used artificial contraception,” said Jones. “But the policies being implemented right now are ones that don’t effect them...." Since the blogger, Sarah Kliff (I think) says she called Ms. Jones, I must assume that the grammatical error is hers. It certainly effected me away from the rest of the article.

I'm just carping. I'm sure there's some Body of Experts who decides these things, or perhaps China gets to make the call. I'm sure you're old enough to remember when Beijing was Peking, for example.

It reminds me of an old joke I heard a standup comic pitch in which he said his name was spelled X6U*, but it was pronounced as "Bob".

"There would be few bugs at sea". Read the original. Still doesn't make sense. Computer bugs? Do they drown in sea water? Bacteria? Insects? What?!?
